Carbon capture and storage research and development

US Energy Secretary Steven Chu has announced the selection of 22 projects that will accelerate carbon capture and storage research and development for industrial sources. Funded with more than US$ 575 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, these projects complement the industrial demonstration projects already being funded through the Recovery Act. Together, these projects represent an unprecedented investment in the development of clean coal technologies. This program supports the President’s goal of cost effective deployment of carbon capture and storage within 10 years and helps to position the US as a leader in the global clean energy race.

‘This is a major step forward in the fight to reduce carbon emissions from industrial plants. These new technologies will not only help fight climate change, they will create jobs now and help position the US to lead the world in clean coal technologies, which will only increase in demand in the years ahead,’ said Secretary Chu.

The selections of 7th September include projects from four different areas of carbon capture and storage (CCS) research and development:

  • Large scale testing of advanced gasification technologies.
  • Advanced turbomachinery to lower emissions from industrial sources.
  • Postcombustion CO2 capture with increased efficiencies and decreased costs.
  • Geologic storage site characterisation.

Large scale testing of advanced gasification technologies

  • Awarded US$ 312 million.
  • Example project: Air Products & Chemicals Inc., development of ion transport membranes oxygen technology for integration with advanced industrial systems.

Advanced turbomachinery to lower emissions from industrial sources

  • Awarded US$ 123 million.
  • Example project: Ramgen power systems, Ramgen supersonic shock wave compression and engine technology.

Postcombustion CO2 capture with increased efficiencies and decreased costs

  • Awarded US$ 90 million.
  • Example project: Membrane technology and Research Inc., pilot testing of a membrane system for postcombustion CO2 capture.

Geologic storage site characterisation

  • Awarded US$50 million.
  • Example project: University of Texas at Austin, Gulf of Mexico Miocene CO2 site characterisation mega transect.
