Halliburton introduces EquiFlow® OptiSteamTM flow control device

Halliburton’s Completion Tools business line has introduced the EquiFlow® OptiSteamTM flow control device (FCD) for steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) injectors. This advanced flow control technology helps operators maximise production efficiency and improve steam-oil ratio by balancing steam injection throughout the length of a completion.

EquiFlow OptiSteam FCD is field adjustable, allowing operators the ability to make wellsite changes to the flow settings. An optional sleeve provides operators control of steam injection, promoting uniform steam chamber growth.

Over 100 EquiFlow OptiSteam devices have been installed through Q1, 2015. Typically operators use more than one device per well, particularly if they need to target specific locations with customised steam injection rates.

“Since 97% of Canada’s oil reserves are in oil sands, we have designed a solution to help maximise recoverable reserves using in-situ technology,” said Artie Burke, vice president of the Completion Tools business line. A typical SAGD project produces tens of thousands of barrels of oil per day, requiring 3-4 times this amount of water for steam generation. A major operator in Canada is using the EquiFlow OptiSteam FCDs for controlling steam injection points along the horizontal well. This allows optimisation of steam energy to the reservoir, increasing efficiencies and accelerating oil recovery.

EquiFlow OptiSteam FCD joins Halliburton’s suite of industry-leading flow control devices for SAGD wells, including another new product, the EquiFlow® Autonomous Inflow Control Device (AICD) for SAGD producers. This technology helps maximise oil production, encouraging cold zones and locally reducing steam by as much as 40% over passive inflow control devices.
