R.Power moves Romanian BESS into final phase of construction

Energy Global,

R.Power is nearing completion of its first utility scale BESS project in Romania, the 127 MW/254 MWh Scornicesti BESS.

EPC contractor, Parapet, working with R.Power’s in-house EPC management team, commenced construction in spring 2026. It has, over the past three months, laid foundations and deployed all 46 battery units and 23 containerised medium-voltage transformer stations.

Scornicesti BESS will be one of the first assets of its kind in Romania, and one of the largest BESS assets to enter operation in Central & Eastern Europe (CEE). Connecting Scornicesti directly to the high-voltage national transmission grid, operated by Transelectrica, is a major undertaking that goes well beyond a standard project and has required extensive design works. Once connected, expected in late 2026/early 2027, the project will become a strategic energy asset for Romania’s national energy system.

R.Power secured a €46 million financing package for the project in June 2026. Under the terms of the deal, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) provided €44 million in investment and bridge financing, while Polish development bank Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) issued a €2.3 million bank guarantee to secure the long-term optimisation contract in place with regional trading partner, GEN-I. The project, located in Olt County, is co-owned through a JV with France’s Eiffel Investment Group.

“As a utility scale asset connected to the national transmission grid, Scornicesti BESS will actively support the stabilisation of Romania’s energy system.” said Florin Federenciuc, R.Power Country Head for Romania. “By integrating BESS at the heart of its energy transition, Romania is strengthening its grid resilience and supporting the roll-out of renewable energy generation. Having contracted our first Romanian PV assets just two years ago, we are proud to now be playing this vital role in one of Europe’s fastest growth energy transition markets.

“Together with EBRD, BGK, Eiffel Investment Group, and GEN-I, we look forward to completing the final phase of construction and commissioning and getting this strategic asset to work.”
