Statkraft, Europe’s largest producer of renewable energy and a leading PPA provider in Europe, and Greenvolt Power, a global utility scale developer of onshore wind, solar, and battery storage projects, have signed a 10-year tolling agreement covering 400 MW of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity across two projects in Poland.
The agreement is the largest publicly communicated in the EU to date and marks Statkraft’s first large scale BESS contract in the Polish market.
The agreement covers two four-hour batteries, Elk (200 MW/800 MWh) and Turosn Koscielna (200 MW/800 MWh), located in Nowa Wies Elcka and Turosn Koscielna respectively. The structure of a tolling agreement gives Statkraft the right to decide when the batteries charge and discharge across energy and flexibility markets, while giving Greenvolt an additional source of predictable, long-term revenue alongside the revenue already secured through Poland’s Capacity Market.

The two BESS projects complement our portfolio of third-party wind and solar assets, on the back of which we can offer competitive and stable prices for energy-intensive off-takers.”
Lukasz Zagórski, Business Origination and Market Regulation Director, Greenvolt Power, noted: “This agreement with Statkraft brings sophisticated market optimisation to these projects, allowing the flexibility of the batteries to be monetised across different power markets and unlocking additional revenues. We have built strong capabilities in originating and developing utility scale assets and, as we move further along the value chain, with projects now entering operation, choosing the right commercial structure is increasingly important.”
As Poland’s power system incorporates increasing amounts of renewable energy, BESS are expected to play an increasingly important role. By storing surplus renewable electricity and releasing it when demand is higher, utility scale batteries help balance supply and demand, stabilise the grid, and facilitate the integration of more wind and solar power into Poland’s energy mix.
The partnership combines Greenvolt’s expertise in developing large scale energy assets with Statkraft’s ability to manage electricity market risk. Through long-term tolling agreements, projects benefit from greater revenue certainty, supporting financing and accelerating the deployment of battery storage infrastructure at scale. This partnership demonstrates the growing maturity of Poland’s flexibility market and the importance of innovative commercial structures in enabling new energy infrastructure.
