SUNOTEC advances 100 MW/441 MWh battery energy storage project

SUNOTEC is advancing the delivery of a 100 MW/441 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Stendal, Saxony-Anhalt.
The storage project represents a significant addition to Germany’s rapidly expanding battery storage infrastructure and will rank among the country’s largest battery storage systems upon completion.
Following the project’s transition to ready-to-build status in 2Q26, SUNOTEC is leading its implementation as a full-turnkey provider, bringing together its engineering, installation, and long-term operations and maintenance capabilities.
Commissioning is planned for 1Q27.
The Stendal project marks another important step in SUNOTEC’s expansion of its battery storage activities across Europe.
Over recent years, the company has gained extensive experience deploying utility scale battery storage infrastructure, with 6.1 GWh of BESS capacity installed across Europe. SUNOTEC is now applying this experience to other markets including Germany, where the accelerating integration of renewable generation is increasing demand for flexible energy infrastructure.
With 441 MWh of storage capacity, the Stendal project is designed to store electricity when supply is high and make it available again when required. Large scale battery storage can thereby provide flexibility to the electricity system, support the integration of renewable generation, and contribute to a more resilient energy infrastructure.

And for SUNOTEC, Stendal is only the beginning.”
On 27 August 2026, SUNOTEC marked the official project launch at the future battery storage site in Stendal, bringing together 65 guests from politics, the energy sector, project partners, and the local community.
Among those attending were Thomas Wünsch, State Secretary at the Ministry of Science, Energy, Climate Protection, and the Environment of Saxony-Anhalt; Bastian Sieler, Lord Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Stendal; representatives of Avacon and WT Energiesysteme; and senior representatives of SUNOTEC and other project partners.
During the ceremony, speakers highlighted the growing importance of large scale battery storage for Germany’s energy system and the significance of continued investment in energy infrastructure in Saxony-Anhalt. The event concluded with a symbolic project launch at the future storage site.
The Stendal project reached ready-to-build status within the SECURSUN framework, the joint venture between SUNOTEC and securenergy. As the project enters implementation, SUNOTEC is leading the delivery of the storage infrastructure.
WT Energiesysteme GmbH is constructing a new 110 kV substation at the site, providing the infrastructure needed to connect the battery storage system to the grid.
The project combines SUNOTEC’s experience in engineering and delivering large scale renewable energy and storage infrastructure with its capabilities in the long-term management of integrated energy assets.
