Econergy Ltd, a leading European renewable energy independent power producer (IPP), has acquired a portfolio of four UK battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects totalling 106 MW.

Under the agreement, Econergy has acquired 100% of the shares in the holding company of the four assets, giving it full ownership and control. The acquired 106 MW portfolio is expected to generate approximately £4.7 million in EBITDA in 2027 before undergoing proposed augmentation. The acquisition adds revenue-generating assets to Econergy’s UK portfolio, with scope to build on their value through planned upgrades to long-duration storage.

All four standalone BESS assets are in commercial operation, and each site is currently operating as a one-hour battery, with potential to upgrade to three-hour storage. Increasing the duration allows the assets to store more energy and dispatch electricity over a longer period, giving them greater flexibility to respond to changing power prices and market conditions. This could also create additional opportunities to shift electricity from periods of high renewable generation to times when demand is higher, helping to increase the value generated by the assets.

The additional 106 MW increases Econergy’s operational UK BESS capacity from 90 MW to 196 MW, taking the company from two to six assets connected to the grid. With a 1.6 GW UK storage pipeline under development, the acquisition builds on Econergy’s wider strategy to diversify its European portfolio across technologies and markets. Storage now accounts for approximately 45% of its total port-folio and 40% of its advanced portfolio.

Alongside these four projects, Econergy's operating UK BESS portfolio today comprises West Melton (50 MW/100 MWh, operating since 2024) and Dalmarnock (40 MW/120 MWh, connected to the grid on 1 October 2026). Across Europe, Econergy has a BESS portfolio of 5.9 GW, with 3.3 GW expected to be connected, under construction or pre-construction by 2028.

Eyal Podhorzer, CEO and Director, Econergy, said: “We’re pleased to be purchasing these four projects, which represent a business opportunity with clear up-side. The addition of 106 MW of operational storage capacity and the potential to augment the assets to three-hour duration gives us a pathway to build on the portfolio and develop its longer-term value. Alongside our existing assets, and those in development, these projects strengthen our foothold in the UK and a growing platform for further expansion.

“This acquisition reflects the way we are evolving our portfolio in response to the changing dynamics of European power markets. The UK has strong storage fundamentals, and its scale and market structure make it an important part of our wider energy storage strategy.”
