Abu Dhabi Future Energy Co. PJSC – Masdar, a global clean energy leader, and Luxcara, a leading independent German asset manager for energy transition infrastructure projects, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic partnership focused on battery energy storage and offshore wind projects in Germany and beyond.

Announced during the UAE state visit to Germany, the agreement will see the companies explore joint investment in excess of €5 billion in battery storage, offshore wind, and potentially other technologies.

The proposed partnership would potentially cover two increasingly important components of Europe’s future energy system. As electricity demand grows and renewable capacity expands, storage will play a critical role in strengthening grid flexibility and reliability, while offshore wind can provide significant volumes of domestically-generated power.

The agreement also reflects the UAE’s role as a committed long-term investor and strategic partner in Europe, supporting investment in the infrastructure required to strengthen regional energy security and meet growing demand for reliable, affordable power.

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, responded: “Germany and Europe generally are important strategic markets for Masdar where we have built a strong track record across offshore wind and other renewable technologies. This agreement with Luxcara gives us the opportunity to deepen that presence, while bringing together two technologies that will be increasingly important to the future of power: large scale renewable generation and battery storage. By combining Masdar’s global investment and development experience with Luxcara’s strong capabilities in the European market, we see significant potential to create long-term value while supporting a more secure and resilient energy system.”

Masdar has built a significant presence across Europe over more than a decade, with investments spanning offshore and onshore wind, solar, and energy storage. Its offshore wind portfolio includes projects in the UK and Germany, while recent acquisitions have expanded the company’s operating platform across Spain, Portugal, South-eastern Europe, and Central Europe.

Battery energy storage is also becoming an increasingly important part of Masdar’s global portfolio. By enabling electricity generated from renewable sources to be stored and dispatched when it is needed, battery storage can help reduce intermittency, improve grid flexibility, and enable greater deployment of renewable energy.

The proposed partnership with Luxcara would further strengthen Masdar’s European platform and support the company’s strategy of investing across the clean energy value chain as it advances towards its target of 100 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Alexandra von Bernstorff, Managing Partner at Luxcara, noted: “We are exploring a promising partnership with Masdar that could bring meaningful investment into Germany’s offshore wind and battery storage sector. With a potential joint investment volume of more than €5 billion, this co-operation underlines Luxcara’s commitment to advancing Germany’s energy transition infrastructure.”

von Bernstorff added: “This agreement stands as a testament to Luxcara’s experience and international reputation in energy transition infrastructure, and to the confidence international investors place in its ability to source, structure, and deliver large scale projects across European markets. Partnering with a global investor of Masdar’s scale further underlines Luxcara’s position as a gateway for international capital seeking exposure to European energy transition infrastructure.”

Luxcara has established itself as a trusted partner for international investors seeking access to Europe’s energy transition. A partnership with Masdar would bring substantial additional international capital into Germany’s clean energy sector, boosting energy security and grid stability at a time when both technologies are central to the country’s power system. The co-operation illustrates how long-term, well-capitalised international investors continue to regard German energy transition infrastructure as an attractive and reliable destination for capital – supporting local jobs and accelerating the pace of Germany’s energy transition.

The MoU remains subject to the parties reaching definitive agreements and the satisfaction of customary conditions and regulatory approvals.
