Revera Energy, a global independent energy platform backed by global investment firm, Carlyle, has closed project financing to construct its second UK battery energy storage system (BESS) project in 2026: the 400 MW/800 MWh Hunterston BESS.
The BESS is located in North Ayrshire, approximately 50 km south-west of Glasgow, Scotland, and north of the B6 boundary, one of the UK’s most persistent power grid bottlenecks. Concurrently, Revera has issued a notice to proceed (NTP) with construction to commence immediately, and with commercial operations expected in 3Q28. This follows the final investment decision (FID) previously announced in June 2026.
Hunterston BESS is the next step in Revera establishing itself as a leading BESS developer, owner, and operator in the UK. It is a crucial part of Revera’s continued support to the UK’s 2030 Clean Power 2030 Action Plan and will contribute to grid resilience and help to unlock the key transmission bottleneck separating wind generation in Scotland from electricity demand in England.
Revera is leveraging its strong partnerships, with Santander, Barclays, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and NatWest providing the non-recourse senior debt financing, and with industry-leading and investment-grade counterparties to construct, deliver, and operate the Hunterston BESS. Notably, Sungrow will supply the BESS and provide a long-term service agreement while OCU Group has been engaged as the Balance of Plant contractor and O&M provider. Danske Commodities and bp will provide trading and optimisation services for the project, with bp providing a long-term tolling structure and Danske Commodities providing a long-term floor structure. Revera will oversee both construction and long-term asset management.
Ron Kiecana, Acting Head of Revera UK, noted: “We are delighted to complete the financing for Hunterston BESS, a key milestone that enables the construction of this critical project. This marks another significant achievement for Revera and a further crucial step in our mission to build a high-quality independent energy platform in the UK and Australia and support the energy transition.”
Sam Lewis, Senior Project Manager on Hunterston BESS, added: “Achieving financial close and NTP on Hunterston BESS is a strong indication of our team’s ability to recognise quality projects, secure top-tier supply chain relationships, and unlock financing in an impressively short period of time. The team’s skillset along with our dedication to building Revera into an industry-leading energy platform puts us in a great position as we look forward to entering the execution stage and working closely with our partners to successfully deliver this project, and continue to grow Revera’s pipeline.”
Hunterston BESS is Revera’s second UK transmission-connected BESS to achieve financial close in 2026. Revera’s Windyhill BESS (200 MW/400 MWh) is progressing well through construction and is on track for commercial operations in 4Q27. Revera has up to an additional 400 MW/1600 MWh of BESS capacity with approved planning consents, land rights, grid access (NESO Gate 2), and 15-year capacity market contracts, for which construction is proposed to commence over the coming months. Revera is working with leading market advisors to further expand its portfolio. With up to 1 GW/2.8 GWh, Revera’s UK BESS portfolio will become one of the largest BESS platforms in Europe.
Revera’s BESS portfolio in Australia continues its significant progress, with Stage 1 of the Bungama BESS (150 MW/300 MWh) having commenced commercial operations in 2Q26. Revera is accelerating the development of its 1000 MW battery storage portfolio in Australia, with the next BESS project (Stage 1 of the Robertstown BESS) expected to achieve financial close in 4Q26.
