METLEN expands European BESS footprint

METLEN is strengthening the position of M RESET within its energy sector in the field of battery energy storage systems (BESS), with major projects and milestones in the UK, Italy, and Greece, highlighting the company’s growing footprint in grid scale storage infrastructure.

In the UK, METLEN recently signed a balance of plant (BoP) contract with Pulse Clean Energy for the landmark 129 MW Penn BESS project in the West Midlands with installed battery capacity of 362 MWh. It is the largest energy storage project the company has undertaken in the country to date, in terms of storage capacity.

Pulse Clean Energy is a fast-growing UK developer and operator of battery storage, with a growing pipeline of projects supporting the decarbonisation of the electricity system and enabling greater integration of renewable generation. It has one of the UK’s largest battery storage fleets at 400 MWh, with another 400 MWh in build and ambitions to reach 2 GWh by 2030.

The scope of work for METLEN on the project also includes grid connection works, another crucial link in the integration of renewable energy. Energisation of the site is expected by the end of 2027.

This significant project further grows METLEN’s footprint in battery storage delivery across the UK, as the country’s energy landscape is evolving. Across the UK, METLEN has delivered or is currently working on a total of approximately 30 battery storage units (including hybrid/collocated solar and battery projects), representing nearly 2 GWh of energy storage capacity, in collaboration with leading partners.

In Italy, METLEN has secured €18 million in long-term financing for a 25 MW/75 MWh BESS project in Apulia, in the province of Brindisi. The project became fully operational within the year and benefits from a seven-year physical tolling agreement with Dolomiti Energia Group. This long-term financing agreement constitutes one of the first of its type in the Italian energy storage market and reflects an advanced commercial model already well established at a European level.

In Greece, in partnership with Karatzis Group of Companies, METLEN has developed the largest standalone battery storage unit planned to date in the country and one of the biggest in Europe. Located in Thessaly region, the project has a capacity of 330 MW with installed battery capacity 790 MWh.

The unit’s output has now been integrated into the national electricity transmission system, marking a key step towards full operational function and participation in grid services.

At the same time, a 48 MW/96 MWh battery storage project was recently completed in Polygyros, in Halkidiki, Central Macedonia. The Aenaos project was implemented under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan Greece 2.0, with funding from the EU/NextGenerationEU.
