Sonnedix, a global renewable energy company with a total capacity of 12 GW, has started operations at Sonnedix Acail and Sonnedix Felgueiras, its first large scale hybrid solar photovoltaics (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects to become operational worldwide. The two projects are the first hybrid installations in Portugal to begin operating connected to the national distribution grid.
Located in northern Portugal, Sonnedix Acail and Sonnedix Felgueiras deliver more than 68 MW of solar PV capacity and more than 140 MWh of storage. The projects’ entry into operation represents a landmark step in Sonnedix’s global hybridisation strategy and demonstrates its evolution as a Next-Gen independent power producer (IPP), with a model focused on industrial customers and the delivery of integrated energy solutions combining generation, storage, trading, and advanced energy management.
The storage systems have been developed in parallel with their respective solar plants, sharing the same fenced perimeter and taking full advantage of construction synergies. This integrated approach optimised construction, while preserving the surrounding landscape, with no requirement for additional land. Both BESS systems are now operating in hybrid mode with full grid charging capacity.
In March 2026, Sonnedix announced the financing of both projects, becoming one of the first structured transactions with commercial banks in Portugal for hybrid solar generation and battery storage facilities.
Gregorio Morales, Chief Commercial Officer of Sonnedix, noted: “Storage is fundamental to our evolution as a Next-Gen IPP. By combining solar generation and batteries, we turn renewable energy into a more flexible, predictable product adapted to our customers’ needs. Sonnedix Acail and Sonnedix Felgueiras are the first step of a global strategy that will enable us to offer increasingly sophisticated energy solutions aligned with real market demand.”
Paulo Pimentel, Director of Sonnedix Portugal, added: “The completion and commissioning of Acail and Felgueiras marks a milestone for Sonnedix in Portugal. These projects reflect the evolution of our portfolio towards hybrid solutions capable of providing greater flexibility to the system and promoting a more efficient integration of renewable energy. With this progress, we continue to consolidate our long-term commitment to Portugal and to the communities in which we operate.”
The projects come online at a moment of strong momentum for renewables and energy storage in Portugal. In January 2026, the country reached 80.7% renewable generation, the highest share in the EU, demonstrating the critical role that flexible assets will play in sustaining and accelerating that progress.
