New geothermal resource to drive collaboration and speed up development

Clean Air Task Force (CATF) has launched the Geothermal Frontier Knowledge Sharing Platform, a free tool that maps institutional research capacity and country-level geothermal profiles in one place.

“Unlocking next-generation geothermal, especially higher-enthalpy resources like superhot rock geothermal, requires connecting research, funding, and industry that are currently fragmented,” said Angela Seligman, Senior Geoscientist at CATF. “The Geothermal Frontier platform is built to help researchers find partners, help industry find testing infrastructure, and help policymakers target funding to close research gaps, all with the goal of accelerating the pace of next-generation geothermal deployment.”

The platform builds on findings from CATF's Bridging the Gaps report series, which identified specific barriers across the geothermal community. Researchers often cannot find collaborators or identify open research niches. Industry cannot always locate labs equipped to run the tests their projects need. Governments may not know where their countries lead or lag in research, limiting their ability to target funding. Investors often lack direct access to experts who can vet what they hear from industry.

The Geothermal Frontier Knowledge Sharing Platform hosts profiles for research groups and institutions showing their current and planned research areas, testing capabilities, including maximum temperature and pressure, and details of key projects underway. A global map tab aggregates this information into country-level profiles showing each nation's expertise and capabilities.
