Hive Energy has received preliminary planning approval, Autorización Administrativa Previa, for its 169 MW solar park in Cuenca, Spain. The project marks the latest step forward in the delivery of Hive Energy’s 2.5 GW international pipeline of solar projects.

The project, called Olmedilla Solar Park, was acquired by Noy Fund, the major Israel-based infrastructure fund manager, in February 2020. Noy Fund will provide long-term funding for the project and will work together with its local partner Eranovum Energy.

Olmedilla Solar Park will significantly contribute to Spain’s Energy Strategy to achieve 100% renewable electricity by 2050 and to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030. At 169 MW, the solar park will supply clean energy to over 52 000 Spanish homes.

The site will cover an area of 420 hectares and will utilise solar tracking technology. The single axis panel mounting system was selected to optimise energy output by increasing solar generation throughout the day. For Hive Energy, this project is an exciting addition to its growing portfolio of solar projects in Spain. Other Spanish solar sites developed by Hive Energy include the recently commissioned 46 MW solar site in Espejo, Cordaba.

Luis Martinez Hermida, General Manager Spain, said of the project: “Receiving autorización administrative for Olmedilla brings us one step closer to delivering our 1.5 GW pipeline of large scale solar in Spain. At Hive Energy we are committed to combatting climate change and being part of the energy transformation to a cleaner future here in Spain and across our markets. The shift to using solar trackers enables us to deliver large scale at lower cost to support the transition to a zero-carbon future.”

Construction of the solar park is planned to commence in Winter 2020, with commissioning expected towards the end of 2021. Contract award for the EPC has gone to ACISA (part of the ALDESA group, one of the largest construction groups in Spain).
