Shell announced at WindEurope Offshore 2019 that its gearbox oil, Shell Omala S5 Wind 320, is now carbon neutral.

Shell's global portfolio of nature-based carbon credits will compensate CO2 emissions from the lifecycle of Shell Omala S5 Wind 320. Each carbon credit represents the avoidance or removal of greenhouse gases equivalent to 1 t of CO2.

Shell Omala S5 Wind 320, a synthetic wind turbine oil with filtration technology, helps to lessen gear and bearing damage, while delivering lubrication performance, increased efficiency, and improving the reliability of the gearbox. With a highly diverse operating temperature range, the oil is designed to operate effectively under severe operating conditions and in extreme climates. Its formulation provides protection to help avoid unplanned downtime and the associated repair costs. Shell Omala S5 Wind also performs against yellow metal materials which makes it fit for purpose as well as for new plain bearing gearbox designs.
