Galileo has secured consents for 250 MW of battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Italy, with consent for a further approximately 100 MW anticipated in the coming weeks, strengthening the company’s more than 3 GW pipeline in the country.
The two consented projects comprise a 125 MW project with 1000 MWh of storage capacity and a further 125 MW project with 500 MWh of storage capacity. The projects are located in Italy’s North and Centre-South power market zones, well positioned within areas of the electricity system that are critical to balancing supply and demand and integrating renewable generation.
The projects form part of Galileo’s diversified development pipeline of more than 3 GW in Italy, spanning utility scale solar photovoltaics (PV), BESS, and onshore and offshore wind. Across Europe, Galileo has a technologically and geographically diversified pipeline of approximately 17 GW.
BESS projects are becoming an increasingly important component of Italy’s energy transition, providing the flexibility required to integrate growing volumes of renewable generation, strengthen grid resilience and support a secure, reliable and decarbonised electricity system.
Originated, designed, and developed in-house by Galileo’s Italian team, the projects have been progressed through the full permitting process, from site identification to authorisation. Using advanced technology and safety standards, they have been carefully designed to minimise environmental impact through responsible siting, natural screening, and landscape mitigation.
Relevant authorities were engaged throughout the permitting process, providing positive assessments within their areas of responsibility. Local municipalities were also consulted right from the start, with them and Galileo agreeing on appropriate territorial compensation measures.
Francesco Dolzani, Managing Director for Galileo in Italy, responded: “Securing consent for a further 250 MW of BESS projects is another important milestone for Galileo in Italy, where in the last 18 months we have secured consents for over 650 MW of solar PV and BESS projects. We are now focusing on progressing these projects towards construction and continue working very closely with our local stakeholders.”
Ingmar Wilhelm, Co-Founder and CEO of Galileo, added: “These latest BESS consents further strengthen Galileo’s multi-technology pipeline of more than 3 GW in Italy. We will embark on our independent power producer trajectory in Italy, one of Europe’s most energy dependent countries, with a selection of high-quality green energy projects in the near future.”
