Watson Farley & Williams (WFW) has advised EWE AG on the sale of its stake in the alpha ventus offshore wind farm to Ocean Breeze Energy.

The transaction is expected to be completed in 4Q26.

Alongside existing shareholders RWE and Vattenfall, EWE is selling its interests in Germany’s first and oldest offshore wind farm. Following the acquisition, Ocean Breeze Energy will continue operating the pioneering project over the long term and ensure its continued operation beyond its originally planned 20-year lifespan.

Located approximately 45 km north of Borkum, Germany, the wind farm was commissioned in 2010 with 12 turbines and a total installed capacity of 60 MW. The joint venture between EWE, RWE, and Vattenfall is widely regarded as a pioneer of the German offshore wind market.

Based in Oldenburg, Germany, EWE is a regional utility provider active in the energy, telecommunications, and information technology sectors. The company supplies electricity and gas, operates energy and telecommunications networks, and develops solutions in the areas of renewable energy, electric mobility, and digital infrastructure.

Ocean Breeze Energy owns and operates BARD Offshore 1 (BO1). With 80 offshore wind turbines, BO1 has a maximum generating capacity of 400 MW. Ocean Breeze Energy is wholly owned by funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management.

The WFW Energy team that advised EWE was led by Hamburg Corporate Partners, Carolin Woggon and Dr Marcus Bechtel, working with Frankfurt Counsel, Christian H. Hinzmann, and Associate, Michel Dohmen. Hamburg Partner, Dr F. Maximilian Boemke, advised on regulatory matters.
